A Very Forgetful Country

Few years back, Malaysia went to ICJ making an attempt to stop Singapore from reclaiming land within Singapore's own territory. The move was unsuccessful due to some obvious reasons.

However, ICJ was kind enough to issue a statement to save Malaysia's face. It said Singapore must always take into consideration of the feeling of the neighouring countries before acting even though thing is to be carried at her full right.

With the statement, the Malaysians cheered and celebrated. They forgot that their intention is to perpetually stop Singapore from reclaiming land which could result in a bigger land area.

Today, Malaysians claim that they won part of the battle and they celebrate again as ICJ has given middle rocks to them. This time they forget that they are asking for the ownership of Pedra Branca which houses the horseburgh lighthouse, and not just the few rocks.

Mahathir - A Man with an Unclear Mind

Dr Mahathir, Malaysia's ex-Prime Minister, says a lot of things, but he may not always mean what he says. For example, he has called Malaysia an Islamic state — in order to steal the thunder from Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) — yet, his record is one of a moderate and secular leader.

Indeed, his policy choices have often differed from his rhetoric. He often rails against globalisation, yet he welcomes international trade. He slams Western "imperialists" intent on dominating the local economy, yet he actively encourages foreign investors.

But words can hurt, even if they are not followed up with action. A Western diplomat once told me that "Dr Mahathir can wear out any relationship with any country because of his rhetoric".

He was referring, in particular, to the United States, Australia and Singapore. I've tried hard to understand why he has been so antagonistic towards these countries. There is no easy answer, but here's what I think.

With the US, it seems to be more of calculated rhetoric. It is an easy target for his rhetorical pot shots, which allow him to bolster his reputation as a spokesman of the Third World — one who dares to speak up to the West.

As for Australia, a lot of people trace this back to 1993 when the then Prime Minister Paul Keating called him a "recalcitrant". That might have been the catalyst for his hostility towards Australia, but it is clear that Dr Mahathir truly resents the idea of a "white" nation joining any Asian regional grouping.

How about his attitude towards Singapore?

Some people like to attribute this to an incident in the 1940s when he asked a Chinese taxi-driver to take him to his friend's house and the driver dropped him off at the servants' quarters of the house. This could have been the catalyst, but what has sustained his resentment is the fact that Singapore is Malaysia's most direct and strongest rival.

A letter to Mr Abdullah Badawi

Dear Mr Abdullah Badawi

I used to be a sincere supporter of you, however due to some obvious reasons, I decided to vote against you this time round.

Should you have not called for a stop to the scenic bridge project, Singapore would have had sued Malaysia for at least 100 billions USD in ICJ. It is definitely a sure-lost case for Malaysia. The hooligan politics of locking opposition in jail and taking full control of entire justice system had seversely demaged the international reputation of Malaysia. But you did not continue to practise it when you took over the government. For that matters, we Malaysian appreciate your decision and efforts.

In 2004, majority of Malaysians thought that their country had finally seen the arrival of a clean and efficient number-1 man and casted their votes to you for a two-third-majority win, but you had disappointed us. You have done very little to minimize the bad impacts of the policies left over by Mahathir, which will destroy Malaysia in time to come. That is the only reason why UMNO almost hands the governing power to opposition in this election.

Corruptions in government cause loss of hundreds of milions ringgits each year and we sincerely wish you could solve this big problem left over by Mahathir.

Please show us that you can win back the heart of all Malaysians in the next election.

Yours sincerely,

Syed Mohktar bin Mohammed Mahathir
